Do You Need Gate Posts on Both Sides of an Aluminum Gate?
A typical single swing gate needs a stable hinge-side support and a suitable opposite support for the latch, receiver or stop. These are often two posts, but verified structural pillars or wall connections can sometimes provide the required support instead.
The two sides do not necessarily perform the same job. The hinge side normally carries the leaf weight and hinge loads; the opposite side supports the closing interface and its assigned loads. Double swing and sliding gates require different support layouts.

Hinge Post vs Latch Post: Different Support Roles
| Support | Typical role | Design checks |
|---|---|---|
| Hinge-side support | Support leaf weight and transfer hinge, wind and operating forces. | Post stiffness, hinge attachments, foundation and gate geometry. |
| Latch-side support | Carry the receiver, closing stop or related hardware. | Alignment, closure forces, hardware attachment and stability. |
| Structural pillar or wall | Provide an alternative support where suitable. | Construction, condition, anchors, load path and foundation. |
The latch side should not be assumed to carry half the leaf weight. Load sharing through rests or stops must follow the actual gate design.
Single Swing Gates: Plan Both Sides of the Opening
For a single aluminum swing gate, coordinate the hinge support, leaf, clear opening, latch receiver and stops before setting posts.
Both sides need enough stability to maintain the specified clearances. A moving latch post can prevent reliable closure even when the gate itself is level.
Do not assume an ordinary fence line post can serve as the hinge post. Confirm the selected post section, hinge fixing and foundation for the gate loads.
Double Swing Gates: Two Hinge Supports & a Meeting Detail
A double swing gate typically has one hinge support for each leaf, with the leaves meeting near the center. Each outer support must be designed for its own leaf.
Specify the meeting gap, latch, center stop and drop bolts where applicable. A center stop or ground socket is not automatically a center post or a substitute for adequate outer foundations.
Check both swing paths, opening direction and finished ground levels. Automated double gates require coordinated operators and their installation details.
Sliding Gates Use a Different Support Arrangement
Sliding aluminum gates are not laid out as hinged leaves. A tracked system transfers loads through wheels and track, while a cantilever arrangement uses its supporting carriage and foundation system.
Guide supports, receiving supports, stops and foundations depend on the selected mechanism. The gate may need side space beyond the clear opening.
Do not use a generic “two posts” rule to specify a sliding gate. Request the complete system layout and mounting requirements.
Can a Brick Pillar or House Wall Replace a Gate Post?
Possibly, if the structure and connection are suitable for the assigned gate loads. Verify the pillar or wall construction, structural core, condition and supporting foundation.
Decorative veneer, cladding or a thin wall cap should not be assumed to provide structural support. The hinge or latch connection needs an appropriate fixing detail.
Where the existing structure cannot be verified, separately founded gate posts may be more appropriate. A panel wall bracket should not automatically be used as a gate hinge mount.
Select Posts from the Gate Loads, Not Appearance Alone
The Wonderful Metal aluminum post range includes embedded, base-plate and reinforced configurations. Select the actual post arrangement according to the gate and project.
- Leaf width, height, weight and infill.
- Wind exposure and operating frequency.
- Hinge spacing, attachment and opening geometry.
- Manual or automated operation and bracket forces.
- Foundation or structural mounting conditions.
Reinforcement and custom fixing preparation can be reviewed for suitability. A larger-looking post alone does not verify the complete support system.
Gate Foundations & Base-Mounted Supports
Gate posts can require different foundations from adjacent fence posts. Soil, frost conditions where applicable, post loads and exposure affect the support detail.
For embedded posts, specify the post embedment and footing geometry separately. For base-mounted posts, confirm concrete condition, plate and weld details, anchors, spacing and edge distances.
Do not fix gate posts only to paving finishes or deck boards. The supporting structure and complete load path need to be suitable.
Measure the Gate Opening Before Ordering
Record the clear distance between the intended support faces. Distinguish it from post center-to-center spacing and the overall gate leaf width.
Allow for hinge geometry, latch clearance, meeting gaps and the selected hardware. Use the manufacturer’s approved dimensions rather than subtracting a generic allowance.
For existing pillars, measure at multiple elevations and check plumb. Include ground levels and swing clearance so a gate does not strike the rising surface as it opens.
Stops, Latches & Automation
Coordinate stops and latches to avoid uncontrolled movement and unnecessary impact. Do not rely on repeated slamming against the latch as a normal operating arrangement.
Automated gates need operator mounting, electrical and safety-device planning. Automation-ready frame preparation does not mean the motor package is included.
Confirm the structural and hardware scope separately, then verify the completed operation according to the selected system instructions.
Pool Gates: Reliable Closing Requires Stable Supports
For pool-barrier gates, stable supports help maintain closing and latching alignment. Review current local requirements for the complete barrier and gate.
Inspect gaps, climbable features and operation after installation. A gate that must be lifted or forced to latch needs correction.
See the US pool fence requirements guide for US context, followed by local confirmation.
Contractor Installation Planning
- Approve the gate type, opening and support layout.
- Verify existing structures or foundation conditions.
- Confirm post, hinge, latch and stop specifications.
- Set out supports and complete the approved foundations.
- Install leaves after supports reach the required readiness.
- Adjust hardware within its permitted range.
- Inspect alignment, full travel and closing operation.
Use the installation guide with the gate-specific drawings. Supporting posts should be planned before adjoining fence panels are fixed.
Wholesale & OEM Gate-and-Post Procurement
For custom aluminum gate orders, schedule hinge posts, latch posts, receivers, stops and hardware separately. Identify which supports are supplied and which existing pillars will be used.
Contractor supply, wholesale fence projects og OEM manufacturing enquiries should include opening dimensions, gate weight where known, mounting details, color and quantities.
Confirm custom holes, reinforcement, samples, inspection, MOQ, lead time and packing in the quotation. Post supply does not replace project foundation design.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every gate need two new posts?
No. Suitable structural pillars or wall supports can sometimes replace posts, and sliding gates use different arrangements. Confirm the complete layout.
Do both posts carry the same gate weight?
Not normally for a single swing gate. The hinge side carries the leaf; the opposite side supports the closing interface and its assigned loads.
Can a fence line post support a gate?
Only if that post, connection and foundation are suitable for the gate loads. Do not assume interchangeability.
Does a double gate need a center post?
Not necessarily. Many double swing gates use outer hinge supports and a center meeting detail. Stops and drop bolts depend on the design.
Can a brick pillar support the hinges?
Possibly, after checking the structure, anchors and foundation for the gate loads.
Are posts included with the gate?
Confirm the order scope. Gate leaves, posts and hardware should be listed separately in the quotation.
