Replacing Wooden Fence Panels with Composite Fencing
A practical guide for UK installers, landscape contractors and project buyers preparing a timber-to-WPC fence upgrade.
Before choosing a colour or ordering panels, establish what can stay, what needs replacing and how the new fence will connect to the site. Wonderful Metal can review your dimensions and discuss composite boards, aluminium framing and project supply options.

01 / Define the scope
Plan Around the Existing Structure
Composite fencing changes more than the appearance of an old boundary. Board thickness, panel weight, fixing positions and wind exposure all affect the replacement design. A fence that looks similar in a photograph may use a completely different support system.
Keep suitable supports
Consider retaining posts only after their condition, foundations and fixing interfaces have been checked. Ask for a proposed connection detail before buying boards.
Renew selected sections
If damage is localised, identify the posts and foundations that need replacement. Check how new and retained sections will align in height and finish.
Install a complete system
Where the old structure is unsuitable, discuss a coordinated package of WPC boards, posts, rails and fittings for the entire fence run.
02 / Record the site
Build a Survey That Can Support a Quotation
Label the openings on a simple sketch and use the same labels on photographs and measurements. Include the awkward sections: a short return beside a shed, a change in ground level or a gate opening often needs a different detail from the main run.
| Survey item | Information to record | How it affects the order |
|---|---|---|
| Post condition | Material, dimensions, visible damage, lean and movement; photographs of the base and fixing area. | Helps identify retained supports and sections needing further assessment. |
| Each opening | Clear width at several heights, post spacing and any out-of-square condition. | Establishes the actual space available for boards and framing. |
| Connection interface | Concrete slot dimensions or usable timber fixing face; existing brackets and obstructions. | Allows review of channels, brackets and fixing access. |
| Finished levels | Required fence top, ground level changes, bottom clearance and any existing gravel board. | Defines panel build-up and stepped sections. |
| Surroundings | Open or sheltered position, neighbouring walls, trees, gates and delivery access. | Highlights exposure, handling and layout constraints. |
Use millimetres on drawings and distinguish board length, opening width and post centre spacing. Record dimensions as measured, without rounding them to a nominal panel size.
03 / Specify the assembly
Order a Compatible Fence Assembly
A successful replacement depends on the interface between the composite infill and its supports. Review the section drawing alongside the material list so each part has a defined purpose.
- WPC boards: confirm profile, effective coverage, length, finish and orientation.
- Posts or side channels: identify the selected support and how it connects to the existing structure.
- Rails: confirm the top and bottom details and any required intermediate support.
- Fixings: specify brackets, screws and anchors for the actual substrate and exposure.
- Finishing pieces: include caps, end closures and corner details where applicable.
Browse the Wonderful Metal WPC fence panel product as a starting point for your specification.

Do not copy expansion gaps, maximum spans or fixing schedules from another manufacturer’s system. Request the requirements for the exact board and framing combination being supplied.
04 / Customisation & supply
Confirm the Details Before Production
Wonderful Metal offers project and OEM/ODM discussions through its WPC fencing range. For a replacement project, customisation should begin with the measured site and a suitable support arrangement.
Appearance and dimensions
Send the required height, board direction, preferred colour and privacy level. Review an available sample before approving a bulk colour, and agree how any stepped panels or cut ends will be finished.
Packaging and identification
For mixed opening sizes, request a clearly labelled packing schedule. Agree whether parts will be supplied as kits or grouped components, and how installers will match them to the drawing.
Programme and delivery
Ask for project-specific quantity requirements, production timing and shipping terms. Include the destination postcode or receiving port, unloading arrangements and required arrival date.

05 / Installation preparation
Agree the Installation Plan Before Removing the Fence
- Resolve the layout. Confirm the intended boundary, finished heights, access and any project-specific permissions with the responsible party.
- Approve the technical details. Check support suitability, connection drawings, movement allowances and the selected installation instructions.
- Inspect the delivery. Match quantities, labels, colours and fittings to the order before installation starts.
- Check the first assembled section. Review alignment, clearances and component fit before repeating the detail along the run.
- Document completion. Retain final photographs, product references and the care instructions supplied for the order.
06 / Enquiry checklist
Send a Brief That Makes the Supply Scope Clear
For an initial discussion, send the information below to [email protected] or use our contact page.
| Project information | What to include |
|---|---|
| Location and scale | UK town or postcode, total fence run, number of openings and project type. |
| Measured layout | Opening schedule, finished heights, corners, level changes and gate positions. |
| Retained structure | Post material, dimensions, condition photographs and slot or fixing-face measurements. |
| Product preference | Reference image, board profile, colour, privacy level and frame finish. |
| Supply responsibilities | Boards only or a coordinated package; identify any locally sourced posts, anchors or other parts. |
| Commercial requirements | Quantity, samples, packing, destination, shipping scope and target delivery date. |
Ask the quotation to distinguish product supply, transport and any excluded items. Site labour, removal, foundation repairs and disposal should be allowed for separately unless expressly included by the party providing those services.
Questions before ordering
Composite Fence Replacement FAQs
Can I keep my existing concrete posts?
Potentially, but condition and fit must be checked first. Send post dimensions, slot measurements and photographs so a suitable connection can be discussed. Do not assume the standard Wonderful Metal system fits every concrete post.
Can composite boards be fixed to old timber posts?
Only consider retained timber after assessing its condition and suitability for the proposed connections and loads. A visually sound surface alone does not establish the condition of the post base or foundation.
Can I order one standard size for the whole garden?
Use a measured layout to decide. Older fence runs may contain irregular openings, short bays or changes in level that require different lengths or details.
How many boards are needed per panel?
The count depends on the selected board’s effective coverage, required infill height and rail arrangement. Confirm it from the approved panel drawing rather than using a generic board count.
Does WPC fencing need painting?
WPC is generally selected to reduce the routine finishing associated with timber. It still needs appropriate cleaning and care. Follow the instructions for the supplied product and avoid unapproved surface treatments.
Can Wonderful Metal supply a complete replacement kit?
Discuss boards, framing and fittings as a coordinated supply package. The quotation should identify the exact kit contents and any components that the installer must source locally.
