How Do You Make a Double-Drive Aluminum Gate?
Specify two compatible swing-gate leaves as one coordinated driveway system. Each leaf needs a suitable hinge support, and the pair needs a reviewed meeting detail, latch or lock, stops and any drop bolts required by the design.

Equal-width leaves are common; unequal leaves can be discussed where access needs or site constraints justify them.
Measure the Clear Opening Before Choosing Leaf Widths
Measure between the intended support faces at the relevant elevations and check support plumb. Record ground levels across the opening and throughout both swing paths.
A nominal “12-foot gate” can refer to an opening designation rather than the combined physical width of two leaves. Twelve feet equals 3,657.6 mm. Specify the actual opening and hardware allowances on the approved drawing.
For a simple non-overlapping layout: clear opening = left hinge-side allowance + left leaf width + center gap + right leaf width + right hinge-side allowance.
Overlapping frames or other closure geometry require their own dimensioning. Do not assume two six-foot leaves fit a twelve-foot opening with no allowances.
Worked Sizing Example for a Double Gate
Hypothetical layout: a 3,600 mm clear opening, 40 mm allowance at each hinge side and a 20 mm center gap leaves 3,500 mm for the two leaves. Equal leaves would each be 1,750 mm wide.

Can You Combine Two Existing Single Gates?
Possibly, after checking compatibility. Review frame strength, handing, dimensions, hinge attachments, infill alignment and the center closure detail.
Two independently designed single gates may have incompatible locks, edge profiles or support assumptions. Do not drill, weld or change a finished frame without an approved modification detail.
For a new project, ordering a coordinated pair makes the interface requirements clearer. Confirm which leaf is active for routine access and how the second leaf is secured.
Drop Rods, Cane Bolts & Center Stops
A drop rod or cane bolt can secure a leaf into a specified ground receiver. Its function, quantity and position depend on whether the gate is manual or automated and on the closure design.
A drop bolt is not a substitute for sound hinges, posts or foundations. A receiver must be compatible with the supporting surface, drainage and required clearances.
Coordinate center stops and opening stops as required by the system. Confirm hardware supply and pricing in the quotation; no fixed accessory price or automatic inclusion is assumed.
Gate Posts & Foundations for Each Leaf
Each outer hinge support carries its assigned leaf and operating forces. Select gate posts or verified structural pillars according to leaf dimensions, weight, wind exposure and hardware loads.
Both foundations require review even when the leaves are symmetrical. Soil, frost conditions where applicable, base-plate anchors and mounting substrate can affect the detail.
A narrow center gap or strong drop bolt does not compensate for leaning or inadequately supported outer posts.
Swing Direction, Slopes & Vehicle Access
Check the full opening arc of both leaves, including driveway slope, paving, landscaping and nearby structures. A gate that clears the ground when closed can strike rising ground as it opens.
Confirm inward or outward operation according to site conditions and local requirements. Keep the gate’s travel within the permitted area.
If swing space is unsuitable, evaluate a different entrance arrangement, such as an appropriately specified sliding gate, rather than forcing a double swing layout.
Manual or Automated Double Swing Operation?
For double swing gates, operator selection depends on leaf geometry, loads, mounting positions, wind and duty cycle. Coordinate the opening sequence where leaves overlap.
Automation-ready fabrication does not mean motors, controls or safety devices are included. Confirm the complete automation scope separately.
Use appropriate installers for electrical work and commissioning. Manual drop bolts and automated operation must be coordinated so a locked leaf is not driven by the operator.
Match the Gate to Your Aluminum Fence
Coordinate infill direction, spacing, height and finish with horizontal slat fencing, vertical slat panels or picket fencing.
Match appearance while retaining suitable gate-frame and support specifications. A wide moving leaf may need a different frame from a stationary fence panel.
